Celtic’s Kyogo Furuhashi may be in line for his first Japan call-up in nearly a year as the national team prepares for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
The Celtic forward last represented Japan against Myanmar one year ago, but has been overlooked by manager Hajime Moriyasu since then. Now, with key Japanese strikers facing issues ahead of qualifiers against Indonesia and China, Kyogo could be back in the mix.
Feyenoord’s Ayase Ueda is sidelined with a hamstring injury, and Blackburn Rovers’ Yuki Ohashi is struggling, having gone seven games without a goal. Japanese media suggest Moriyasu may turn to Kyogo to fill the gap in the squad.
In a statement, Moriyasu said, “Ayase Ueda’s injury opens a door for fresh talent. I’ve been observing some players who can make a difference.”
Japan already has Celtic’s Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate in the squad, though Hatate has expressed frustration after traveling nearly 30,000 miles since June without getting game time.
