With a quarter of the Championship season completed, the league table is beginning to take shape in what promises to be another fiercely competitive promotion battle. Just five points separate Middlesbrough in ninth place from Burnley, who currently sit second with 23 points, the same total as third-placed Leeds United.
One of the season’s biggest surprises is Sunderland, who find themselves at the top of the table after 12 games, leading by a remarkable five-point margin. The Black Cats have secured nine victories in their first 12 matches, including three consecutive wins heading into the weekend, and they show no signs of slowing down.
This unexpected success has caught the attention of many, including Leeds United’s stand-in captain Pascal Struijk, who remarked to BBC West Yorkshire Sport, “We always have high expectations. I am a bit surprised by Sunderland, by the way. They have started really well. But this league is long and very tough. It’s about how we deal with the challenges throughout the season, like injuries at the moment, and how we play through them to achieve success as a team.”
Leeds will aim to fend off the challenges from teams like Sheffield United and West Bromwich Albion while staying in contention for the top two spots as they face Wayne Rooney’s struggling Plymouth Argyle tomorrow afternoon.
