Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler has downplayed the need for January reinforcements in central defense despite recent injuries affecting key players. Club captain Lewis Dunk’s calf injury, sustained during warm-ups against Wolves, has added to the defensive setbacks, with Adam Webster also sidelined due to a hamstring problem. Jan Paul van Hecke, recently back from a groin strain, is expected to team up with Igor Julio in central defense for Brighton’s challenging fixtures, including two games against Liverpool and a clash with Manchester City at the Amex.
While Hurzeler had initially eyed a potential move for experienced German defender Mats Hummels over the summer, he now believes the squad has sufficient depth to manage without new signings in January. Hurzeler mentioned that Dunk and Webster should return sooner than anticipated, adding that Joel Veltman, typically a right-back, can also provide cover in central defense if needed.
