Report: Trade Proposal Has Maple Leafs Acquiring Veteran $7.5 Million Defenseman….

The Toronto Maple Leafs may be exploring trade options as the deadline approaches, with one recent proposal involving defenseman Matt Dumba from the Dallas Stars.

A trade concept posted on PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool suggests Toronto could acquire Dumba and a 2025 fourth-round pick (via Winnipeg) in exchange for Timothy Liljegren and Nick Robertson. The move would give the Maple Leafs a veteran defenseman to strengthen their current lineup, while Dallas would gain two young talents for both immediate and future impact.

Dumba, who joined Dallas on a two-year, $7.5 million deal, could provide Toronto’s third-pairing with more physicality and offensive prowess. Over his NHL career, he’s played 679 games with 83 goals and 165 assists, totaling 248 points.

Dallas, in turn, would receive Liljegren and Robertson, both of whom have been healthy scratches for Toronto this season. Liljegren, signed to a two-year, $6 million extension, could replace Dumba on the Stars’ blue line. Robertson, meanwhile, would have the chance to play alongside his brother, Jason Robertson, one of the Stars’ standout players.

### Analyst’s Take on Liljegren and Robertson

Sportsnet analyst Luke Fox expects Toronto to consider trading Liljegren and Robertson, both of whom were originally high draft picks for the Maple Leafs but have struggled with consistency. Fox points out that Liljegren has frequently been scratched this season, while Robertson has found limited opportunities, scoring just once this season.

Liljegren, selected 17th overall in the 2017 draft, and Robertson, a second-round pick in 2020, have yet to establish themselves as everyday players in Toronto, suggesting a fresh start with Dallas could be beneficial for both.

### Toronto’s Interest in Dumba

The Maple Leafs have shown interest in Dumba before. Around the 2024 trade deadline, Toronto was linked to him, with rumors indicating the team had also explored options with other physical defensemen like Ilya Lyubushkin. Although they ultimately acquired Lyubushkin, Dumba remains a player of interest for the Leafs, potentially making him a valuable addition as they approach the current trade deadline.

This potential move highlights Toronto’s drive to add veteran stability on defense as they push for playoff success.
