A Man of Great Reputation” – Former Celtic Chief Jock Brown Makes Surprising Return to Scottish Football.
Former Celtic general manager and football commentator Jock Brown has re-entered the Scottish football scene, 26 years after his contentious departure from Parkhead.
Brown was hired by Celtic in June 1997 but exited less than 18 months later amidst fan and media backlash over his management of the club. During his tenure, he worked closely with Fergus McCann and played a significant role in appointing Wim Jansen, who famously led Celtic to a title victory that halted Rangers’ 10-in-a-row bid. However, Jansen resigned just two days after securing the championship, citing conflicts with Brown, who had become an unpopular figure among Celtic fans.
The appointment of Jozef Venglos as Jansen’s replacement and subsequent on-field challenges only intensified the criticism directed at Brown, leading to his resignation in November 1998.
**”A Disappointing Yet Necessary Decision” – Jock Brown Reflects on Past, Returns to SPFL as Hamilton Accies Chairman**
Reflecting on his Celtic exit, Jock Brown had stated, “I am very disappointed to have come to this decision, but it would be insensitive and inappropriate for me not to acknowledge the difficulties my continued involvement here would present for the club.” Now, more than 25 years later, Brown is back in Scottish football as he takes on the role of chairman for Championship side Hamilton Accies, replacing John Brown.
Hamilton Accies’ owner, Seref Zengin, expressed his excitement about Brown’s appointment, emphasizing the 78-year-old’s impressive background as both a solicitor and sports commentator, having worked with networks like Sky Sports, ITV, BBC, STV, and Setanta. “Jock brings a wealth of knowledge and experience,” Zengin remarked, adding that Brown is not only “a man of great reputation, integrity, and professionalism” but also a lifelong supporter of the Accies. Brown’s deep connection to the club is underscored by family ties; his father once represented the club on the field.
With Brown’s leadership, Zengin believes Hamilton Accies will continue to flourish, saying, “His vision and commitment to excellence will be crucial as we embrace both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”
