Brighton & Hove Albion’s latest updates come after their 2-2 Premier League draw with Wolves at the Amex Stadium.
Fabian Hurzeler’s substitutions have been heavily discussed after Brighton squandered a two-goal lead to settle for a draw. The decision to bring on Evan Ferguson for Danny Welbeck in the 73rd minute was a success, as the Irish player scored five minutes later, putting Albion in a strong position for a win.
The substitution of Brajan Gruda for Ferdi Kadioglu in the 72nd minute appeared reasonable, but the moves that drew criticism from fans were replacing Carlos Baleba with Mats Wieffer and Georginio Rutter with Tariq Lamptey.
Both Rutter and Baleba had been impressive against Wolves, but as the game wore on, they struggled with fatigue, allowing Gary O’Neil’s team to gain momentum.
Hurzeler’s choice to introduce Lamptey paid off as he assisted Ferguson for the second goal, seemingly sealing the win. However, tension mounted when Raul Aït-Nouri scored for Wolves, reducing Brighton’s lead. It seemed likely that Brighton would secure their third consecutive win and climb to fourth place in the league.
But things didn’t go as planned. As Wolves increased their pressure, Brighton had a promising four-on-one counter-attack. Wieffer, however, made a crucial mistake, passing directly to Wolves defender Tommy Doyle, who set up Matheus Cunha for a 93rd-minute equalizer.
What should have been a 3-1 victory turned into a 2-2 draw, leaving Wieffer devastated at the final whistle.
“He will be disappointed, and he should be,” Hurzeler told *Sussex World*. “He’ll overcome this and bounce back. He has a strong character, and we’ll support him.”
While Hurzeler faced criticism for taking Baleba off, it was clear Baleba was struggling in the final minutes. His performance began to dip, and his decisions became less effective. Substituting him was the right move, and had Wieffer made a different choice during that pivotal moment, Hurzeler’s tactics would have been praised rather than criticized.
The issue was straightforward and fixable. Once Ferguson’s goal went in, the players and fans believed the game was in the bag against a Wolves side with only one point from eight matches. Brighton’s intensity dropped, allowing Wolves to capitalize. It’s a tough lesson, but one that can lead to growth. Having experienced players like Lewis Dunk and James Milner might have made a difference in managing the game’s final stages.
Despite this setback, there’s confidence that Wieffer will prove himself at Brighton. He had a rough start against Everton and then missed time due to injury. Every new player needs a breakout performance to show their quality to the team and supporters. Rutter had his moment against Tottenham, and Wieffer’s chance will come. He has too much talent for it not to.
Wieffer is likely to start in the Carabao Cup match against Liverpool at the Amex Stadium this Wednesday, facing his former Feyenoord manager, Arne Slot. He’ll be eager to move past his mistake against Wolves.
