New York Jets linebacker Quincy Williams received a $45,020 fine from the NFL ahead of their Week 8 game against the New England Patriots, marking his sixth fine for unnecessary roughness in recent seasons. This penalty stemmed from what the league described as “unnecessary roughness/use of helmet” on a tackle against Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jaylen Warren. The incident occurred near the Jets’ end zone, where Williams claimed Warren initiated helmet-to-helmet contact by lowering his head, making it difficult to avoid a high-impact hit. Williams responded to the penalty with frustration, posting on social media to express his concern over the practicality of avoiding such hits and criticizing the league’s approach, adding hashtags like “#Flagfootball” and “#Twohandtouch” to emphasize his dissatisfaction with what he sees as restrictive tackling rules.
Williams, a 2023 All-Pro selection, is known for his intense play style, recording 48 tackles this season, and had a career-high 139 tackles last year. His aggressive tackling approach, however, has led to multiple fines over his six-year NFL career, all during his last three seasons with the Jets. Despite the recent setback, Williams remains a crucial part of the Jets’ defense as they look to end a four-game losing streak against the Patriots on Sunday.
