Report:Jets’ Quincy Williams receives $45,020 fine after Steelers game

New York Jets linebacker Quincy Williams is thrilled about Haason Reddick’s arrival for Week 8 against the New England Patriots, hoping the Pro Bowl pass rusher will bring an added spark to their defense. However, Williams is notably less pleased with the NFL’s decision to fine him $45,020 for unnecessary roughness due to a helmet-first hit on Steelers running back Jaylen Warren in last week’s game. The hit wasn’t flagged on the field, but the league cited the contact as part of its broader initiative to reduce helmet-initiated tackles, which often leads to hefty fines issued each Saturday.

The NFL’s crackdown isn’t only limited to defenders; offensive players like running backs Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs, and Zach Charbonnet have also been fined for similar infractions this season. With consistent fines for helmet-based contact, players are increasingly mindful of the financial repercussions of physical plays that go unnoticed during the game.

Williams, a crucial part of the Jets’ defense since joining in 2021, signed a three-year, $18 million extension in 2023 following a standout season with 139 combined tackles and an All-Pro nod. As the Jets aim to turn their season around, Williams will be looking to keep up his strong performance without incurring further penalties.
