Celtic could earn approximately £48 million if they advance to the knockout stages of the Champions League this season, according to sources from *Football Insider*. The club secured their place in the competition by winning the Scottish Premiership title over Rangers last season.
A report by *The Times* on August 27 highlighted that leading Champions League clubs could earn an additional £23 million this season, following changes in the competition format by UEFA. The tournament has expanded from 32 to 36 teams, with all clubs now competing in a single league and each team playing eight matches—four at home and four away.
Celtic began their campaign with a convincing 5-1 win over Slovan Bratislava but suffered a heavy 7-1 defeat against Borussia Dortmund. However, they bounced back with a resilient 0-0 draw against Atalanta in their third group stage match.
Celtic’s remaining fixtures include two away games against Dinamo Zagreb and Aston Villa, and home matches against RB Leipzig, Club Brugge, and Young Boys.
Should Celtic advance to the knockout stages, they could outshine Rangers financially. According to UEFA documents from March, each Champions League participant is guaranteed £16 million, with opportunities for additional earnings through UEFA’s new value pillar system, which considers coefficient rankings and market pools. Clubs also receive £1.8 million for each group stage win and £583,000 for a draw.
Automatic qualification for the last 16 could bring Celtic an additional £9.2 million, while teams finishing between 9th and 24th place earn £830,000 for participating in the knockout play-offs. Further payments depend on a team’s standing after the group stage, with higher-ranked teams earning more. Celtic’s current 20th place could be worth £3.9 million.
Overall, advancing to the knockout stages could bring Celtic close to £48 million, a significant increase over the £12 million Rangers could potentially earn if they progress in the Europa League.
