The Utah Hockey Club, formerly the Arizona Coyotes, will be without two key defensemen for an extended period due to surgeries. Sean Durzi underwent surgery on his right shoulder, which he injured in the team’s fourth game of the season, and is expected to be sidelined for four to six months. John Marino, who has been dealing with lower-back issues since training camp, also had surgery and will miss three to four months.
To help fill the gap, the team recalled Maveric Lamoureux, their 2022 first-round pick, from their AHL affiliate in Tucson. The injuries to Durzi and Marino are a setback for the Utah Hockey Club, as they aim to break their long playoff drought, which dates back to 2012. This season marks the club’s first in Salt Lake City after relocating from Arizona under new ownership, with the NHL treating them as a new franchise while Arizona retains the historical records.
The team is looking to build a competitive roster, but these injuries will challenge their defensive depth early in the season.
