The debate over whether Aberdeen can truly challenge Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title is gaining momentum, especially after their impressive start to the season. Both teams are level on points after eight games, with Celtic leading only on goal difference (+21 to +9). Aberdeen’s recent comeback to earn a point against Celtic at Parkhead shows they are not backing down easily, adding fuel to the discussion.
From a practical standpoint, Aberdeen must continue playing at an exceptionally high level, while Celtic, historically dominant in domestic competitions, would need to slip up. Celtic’s ability to secure the title even when not at their best, often winning despite below-par performances, is what Chris Sutton highlighted. He argued that, while Aberdeen are strong, their squad depth doesn’t match Celtic’s or Rangers’, and they lack the same resources.
Aberdeen also benefit from not being involved in European competitions this season, which allows them to focus entirely on the league. Celtic, meanwhile, are juggling domestic and European fixtures, which could provide an opportunity for Aberdeen if Celtic falter under the demands of both competitions.
The big question, as Rory Smith asked, is whether other teams in the league can help Aberdeen by taking points off Celtic. While Celtic are strong, they are not invincible. Sutton acknowledged that Celtic have “huffed and puffed” in some games, and Aberdeen might stand a chance if they can remain consistent and take advantage of any slip-ups by the reigning champions.
Rangers, too, complicate the equation. Despite sitting six points behind, they remain a contender, and the fixtures between the top three clubs will be pivotal. For Aberdeen to have a real shot at the title, they must not only perform consistently against the league’s lesser sides but also secure results in head-to-head matchups with Celtic and Rangers. This adds significant pressure, but as Sutton said, if they “can keep hanging in around, then you just don’t know.”
