Celtic’s young striker Johnny Kenny has been making a significant impact in Ireland this season. A contender for the League of Ireland Golden Boot, Kenny has voiced his frustration with Celtic for not showing more interest during his loan spell at Shamrock Rovers. He feels he’s doing everything possible to prove his parent club wrong.
Kenny joined Celtic from Sligo Rovers in January 2022 as an 18-year-old on a five-year contract but has yet to make his debut for the Scottish side. After being loaned to Queen’s Park in the Scottish Championship, he struggled to score in 12 appearances.
Last season, Kenny was loaned to Shamrock Rovers in the League of Ireland but initially found it difficult, scoring only five goals and providing one assist in 30 matches. However, this season has seen a remarkable transformation, with Kenny netting 12 goals and providing two assists in 27 league games, just two goals shy of the league’s top scorer, Patrick Hoban. He has also added two goals in three Champions League qualifying matches, aiming to impress in the Europa Conference League as well.
Kenny is an important part of Shamrock Rovers’ pursuit of a fifth consecutive league title, but admits the lack of acknowledgment from Celtic has been tough to handle. In an interview with The Irish Independent, he expressed his disappointment, stating that although he receives occasional messages from Darren O’Dea, Celtic’s player pathway manager, contact has been minimal.
Kenny acknowledged last year’s lack of communication due to his form but feels that his improved performance this season has warranted more recognition. Despite this, he remains hopeful of getting an opportunity at Celtic, though he understands that it may be limited. For now, he’s focused on taking things game by game and seeing where his efforts lead.
