Celtic FC Women’s 1-0 win over Spartans at their new home, New Douglas Park, came at a crucial time, providing a lift after their recent 1-0 defeat to Hearts. Morgan Cross’s early goal was enough to secure the victory, though the match showcased some of the same struggles Celtic has faced in front of goal. Despite the win, Spartans’ solid defensive play prevented Celtic from extending their lead, highlighting the Hoops’ difficulties in converting chances.
The victory helped Celtic gain ground in the SWPL, taking advantage of dropped points from both Hibernian and Rangers, who drew 1-1. Hibs, in particular, missed a late penalty before conceding a last-minute equalizer. This result allows Celtic to move level on points with Hibs, while remaining four points behind both Hearts and Rangers, and five behind league leaders Glasgow City. However, with a game in hand against Queens Park in early November, the Hoops have a valuable opportunity to close the gap on the top four.
The win also marked the end of a challenging period for Celtic, who had gone four matches without a victory across all competitions, including a tough midweek Champions League fixture against Real Madrid. Head coach Sadiku acknowledged the team’s mixed performance, expressing satisfaction with the result but a desire for greater consistency and attacking urgency.
With the international break providing time for rest and reflection, Celtic’s next league fixture against Motherwell on November 3 will be an important chance to continue their push up the table. Improving their goal-scoring form will be key, especially against lower-ranked sides, as their current goal difference has left them behind the top four contenders. Nonetheless, the win over Spartans and the opportunity to reset during the break provide a positive platform for Celtic as they aim to regain their form in the SWPL.
