**Ellis Simms**, who joined **Coventry City** from **Everton** in 2023 for a reported fee of up to £8 million, is facing a tough period in his second season with the club. Signed as a replacement for star striker **Viktor Gyökeres**, who departed for **Sporting Lisbon** for a club-record £20 million fee, Simms initially made a notable impact but is currently struggling for form.
After a successful loan spell with **Sunderland** in the first half of the 2022/23 season, where he scored seven goals in 17 appearances, Simms was recalled by **Everton** to provide depth but struggled to establish himself in the Premier League. His move to Coventry seemed promising, especially after he found his stride in the latter part of the 2023/24 season. Simms netted 11 goals in 16 Championship games, including two hat-tricks and a memorable goal in the FA Cup semi-final against **Manchester United** at Wembley.
However, this season has been a different story for the 23-year-old. Simms has managed just **one league goal in 10 appearances** so far, and his poor form has seen him in and out of **Mark Robins’** side. His lack of consistency has led to **Brandon Thomas-Asante** getting more starts, though he too has only scored once in the league this season. Simms has missed several big chances, with his goal conversion rate standing at a low 7%.
With his performances not living up to the expectations set by his transfer fee and previous success, the pressure is mounting on Simms to turn his form around. If he fails to do so, the risk of being labeled a flop at the **Coventry Building Society Arena** is becoming a growing concern.
