Report: “He’s not up to par” – Player questioned after Brighton exit as hype turns into criticism

Brighton & Hove Albion made over €10 million from the sale of Billy Gilmour to Napoli this summer.

The midfielder didn’t start for Napoli in Serie A until recently, when an injury to Stanislav Lobotka saw the Scotland international included in the starting lineup against Empoli. However, Gilmour’s performance was underwhelming, as he struggled physically and didn’t make an impact defensively.

Former Napoli midfielder Massimo Mauro commented on Gilmour’s performance, stating in an interview with Mediaset, as reported by AreaNapoli, “In my opinion, he’s not up to par.”

Mauro also suggested that Gilmour might not be the suitable backup for Lobotka that Napoli needs, warning, “If Stanislav Lobotka is still missing, it will be a big problem for Napoli.”

Just a week ago, there was excitement surrounding Gilmour, but the narrative has quickly shifted, which often happens with Napoli’s media coverage.

Gilmour’s stint at Brighton showed that he needed time to adapt, as he wasn’t a regular in his first season but improved and became more involved in the following campaign. Therefore, Napoli may need to exercise some patience with their new signing as he adjusts to life in a new country. It wouldn’t be wise to judge him too harshly after just his first Serie A start.
