Newcastle United’s forwards struggled against Brighton, including Anthony Gordon. Despite dominating for periods, the Magpies failed to score during Saturday’s match, leading to the familiar saying that they could have played at St James’ Park all night without finding the net.
Alexander Isak will be disappointed after missing several opportunities, but he wasn’t alone in squandering chances. Anthony Gordon also missed a key chance to equalize late in the game, when he was played through on goal by Fabian Schar but directed his shot weakly into Bart Verbruggen’s hands. It was a frustrating outing for the 23-year-old, especially as it marked his first match after missing a penalty against Everton.
Newcastle legend Alan Shearer believes Gordon’s recent penalty miss might have contributed to his struggles against Brighton. Speaking on *The Rest Is Football* podcast after the 1-0 defeat, Shearer discussed the team’s attacking challenges.
“For half an hour, it might have been as good as they’ve played all season,” Shearer noted. “The game could have turned if Isak had converted his chance—90 seconds later, Welbeck scored. Goals change games.
“Newcastle’s forwards have been underperforming, which is part of why they sought to bring in a right-sided forward. Wilson hasn’t featured, Isak has dealt with injuries, and Gordon has had to fill in as a center-forward. Missing that penalty at Everton likely impacted his confidence, leading to further missed chances against Brighton.”
