Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler believes Danny Welbeck could continue playing into his 40s after the striker secured a tough Premier League win against Newcastle. The 33-year-old scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory at St James’ Park on Saturday but had to be stretchered off after enduring a rough first half, during which goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen shined.
Welbeck shared an update: “Still a bit sore, but after some extra checks and a scan today, I’m happy to say I should be back in training soon. Thanks to our medical staff and Newcastle Royal Infirmary A&E for their care and professionalism. And thanks to the boys for waiting for me to get home! Huge 3 points.”
Welbeck’s goal came 10 minutes before halftime, following a key save from Verbruggen, who denied Alexander Isak in a one-on-one situation as the hosts missed several opportunities. Brighton gained more control in the second half, and the scoreline could have been more comfortable if substitute Kaoru Mitoma had capitalized on two late chances.
Welbeck’s match ended early after he was struck in the back by defender Fabian Schar’s knee, requiring him to be carried off the pitch. Hurzeler commented, “He will have a scan, and hopefully, we’ll know more soon. I think the opponent’s knee hit his back. Hopefully, it’s not serious, but we’ll wait for the scan results.”
Hurzeler praised Welbeck, the former Manchester United and Arsenal striker, predicting he could follow in the footsteps of teammate James Milner, who continues to perform well into his 39th year.
When asked about Welbeck’s future, Hurzeler said, “If he keeps up his current attitude, he can play for many years. We have another player who’s nearly 40 and still striving to be his best every day, just like Danny.
“I knew from the start that he had great talent and was a fantastic teammate. He’s not just an excellent player, but a great person as well. He understands the team’s dynamics and works to bring the players together, which is very valuable to me.”
