Celtic legend Martin O’Neill is concerned that Rangers’ poor performance is making it difficult for Brendan Rodgers to improve his own team. O’Neill, known for being outspoken, recently criticized the current Rangers side as the worst he has ever seen. He expressed his concern after Rangers’ disappointing 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock, which left them six points behind leaders Celtic and Aberdeen after just eight matches.
O’Neill believes that for Celtic to stay at their best, they need a strong Rangers to push them, even though he might not have admitted this during his time as manager. He said, “To keep Celtic sharp, it’s crucial to have a competitive Rangers. If Rangers are struggling, and Aberdeen becomes the closest challenger, then over the course of a season, you might feel confident about winning.”
He also offered advice to Philippe Clement, Rangers’ manager, stressing that results matter more than style during tough times. O’Neill said, “They’re not good enough, so as a manager, you must get the most out of your team, find a clear strategy, and just hang in there. Win the games, even if it’s not pretty.”
Reflecting on Celtic dropping a few points, O’Neill emphasized that Rangers should focus on chasing down Celtic. He added, “You have to get the result, just focus on that. But they didn’t look like scoring, which is the main issue with this team. They need to secure three straight wins to regain some hope and confidence.”
