Report:The official reason Yankuba Minteh missed Newcastle United St James’ Park return for Brighton

Yankuba Minteh, Brighton & Hove Albion’s promising winger, missed out on a return to Newcastle United due to a minor injury sustained during international duty with Gambia. Minteh, who joined Brighton from Newcastle for £33 million in June, had impressed prior to the international break by scoring in Brighton’s 3-2 win over Tottenham. However, after playing two matches against Madagascar for Gambia, including scoring a stoppage-time equalizer, he picked up a knock and was unable to feature in Brighton’s 1-0 victory at St James’ Park.

Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler explained that the club chose to be cautious, prioritizing Minteh’s long-term fitness and availability after his travels and the injury concern. Despite not featuring, Brighton secured a narrow win thanks to a goal from Danny Welbeck, handing Newcastle their first home defeat of the season and extending their winless run to four Premier League matches.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe addressed Minteh’s sale before the match, acknowledging that while it was painful to let the player go, the move was necessary to comply with financial regulations and avoid potential penalties. Howe praised Minteh’s qualities, including his pace, power, and skill, indicating that the decision was purely financial, not based on performance .
