Danny Welbeck’s Goal Secures Brighton’s Victory Against Newcastle Amid Yankuba Minteh’s Absence

Danny Welbeck’s solitary goal led Brighton & Hove Albion to a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday, marking the Magpies’ first home defeat of the season. While the Seagulls celebrated their hard-fought win, the absence of Yankuba Minteh, who joined Brighton from Newcastle for £33 million in June, was a talking point among fans.

The official reason Yankuba Minteh missed Newcastle United St James' Park return for Brighton

Minteh, a promising 20-year-old winger, had recently made headlines for scoring in Brighton’s 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur before the international break. However, he missed the trip to Newcastle following international duty with Gambia, where he played twice against Madagascar. Despite scoring a last-minute equalizer in the first match, Minteh was withdrawn during the 1-0 win on Monday, prompting concerns about his fitness.

Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler addressed Minteh’s absence post-match, revealing that the player was nursing a minor knock after his long travels with the national team. “We had to deal with some issues with him coming back from long travel with Gambia with a small issue,” Hürzeler explained. “We have a responsibility to take care of the players and ensure their availability.”

Newcastle’s head coach Eddie Howe reflected on the decision to sell Minteh, stating, “In my opinion, it was absolutely the right thing to do but it still hurts to have done it. We had no other option.” Howe emphasized that the sale was necessary for the club’s financial health, despite acknowledging Minteh’s potential and skill set.

As Newcastle continues to struggle, now going four Premier League matches without a win, they will be eager to regroup and improve in their upcoming fixtures. Meanwhile, Brighton will look to build on this momentum, hoping to have Minteh back in action soon.
