It’s still too early to make a definitive judgment—let’s give it a couple more matches. However, I do hope Aberdeen proves to be title contenders, as that would only benefit the competition.
Aberdeen came to Celtic Park with a point to prove as potential title challengers, and despite being two goals down at halftime, they managed to leave with a draw. It’s fair to say they weren’t intimidated by the challenge.
This was my first close look at the Dons this season, and I was impressed by both their style of play and their determination.
While Celtic wasn’t exactly poor, they weren’t at their best either. Missed opportunities, combined with some defensive mistakes, allowed Aberdeen back into the game. On a different day, Celtic could have won by a couple of goals, so Aberdeen did have a bit of luck. But sometimes, a bit of luck is needed to compete at the top.
The main question is whether Aberdeen can maintain their momentum throughout the season. As the pressure increases, it could become more challenging. Celtic has experience on their side, having navigated title races before, while this is new territory for Aberdeen. How they handle it will be crucial.
Injuries and suspensions are other challenges that every team faces as the season progresses, and Aberdeen will need to overcome those hurdles too.
With only eight games played, it’s too soon to say if Aberdeen are true title contenders. Perhaps after 28 games, if they’re still competing at the top, we can consider them serious challengers. But for now, it’s still early days.
I hope they do emerge as genuine title rivals, as it would add excitement to the league. If Aberdeen wins their next two matches before facing Celtic in the semi-final, it will be a sign that a title race involving a challenger from the North East is on the cards. These matches, both at Pittodrie against Dundee United next Saturday and then against Rangers a week later, are pivotal.
Their draw at Celtic Park should boost their confidence, giving them the belief that they can secure six points from these home fixtures. If they do, it could set up a very interesting season.
To challenge for the title beyond the usual favorites, a team must first dominate against the rest of the league, and Aberdeen has done that so far. But that’s just one part of the equation. To truly compete, they must also take points off the Glasgow clubs, and Aberdeen managed that at Celtic Park. If they can follow up with a win over Dundee United and then beat Rangers, it would further solidify their position.
Meanwhile, Celtic has already collected four points from matches against Rangers and Aberdeen but faces away games against both later. Rangers, currently with zero points from their big matchups, will have a chance to make up ground with two home games against the top two.
The next few weeks will be critical, starting today at Rugby Park, where Rangers will aim to close the gap on both Celtic and Aberdeen to just three points.
