Gordon Dalziel has pinpointed what he believes is Celtic’s main issue, following their 2-2 draw with Aberdeen at Celtic Park.
The Scottish Premiership’s top two teams clashed on Saturday, with a tightly contested match unfolding. Celtic initially took a 2-0 lead but were eventually pegged back. Despite ten minutes of added time, neither side could find a winner, resulting in a draw.
Celtic’s defense, particularly the centre-back pairing of Liam Scales and Auston Trusty, faced criticism after the match. However, former top-flight striker Gordon Dalziel views the situation differently, attributing Celtic’s defensive struggles to the absence of Cameron Carter-Vickers.
Dalziel emphasized how crucial Carter-Vickers is to Celtic’s defense, explaining that his presence significantly boosts Scales’ performance and could have a similar effect on Trusty.
“Celtic’s big problem is…Carter-Vickers is so important to the [centre-back] partnership, because when he plays with Scales, Scales has been brilliant for Celtic,” Dalziel remarked on Clyde 1’s Superscoreboard. “Now, maybe when Carter-Vickers plays with Trusty…but what it tells me is Carter-Vickers is such an important part of that defensive team.”
He also defended left-back Alex Valle from criticism, stating, “I would not jump on the bandwagon of saying ‘oh Greg Taylor was’, I don’t think the boy [Alex Valle] played that badly today.”
It was initially hoped that Carter-Vickers might return for the Aberdeen game, but now the focus shifts to whether he will be ready for Celtic’s upcoming Champions League match against Atalanta.
