Celtic fans have been accused of smoking weed in the stands during a Women’s Champions League match last week.
The team made history by competing in the UEFA Champions League for the first time, facing FC Twente in their opening Group B match. Despite a strong effort, Elena Sadiku’s squad fell 2-0 to the Dutch side.
Celtic’s home matches in European competition are often marked by the electric atmosphere created by their passionate fans. While that energy was present last Tuesday, Twente captain Danique van Ginkel was surprised by a different aspect—she and her teammates noticed the distinct smell of marijuana coming from the home supporters.
The 23-year-old described the unique atmosphere, saying, “I have never experienced an atmosphere like that – there was so much cheering. But there was a downside – the fans were smoking weed. Everyone could smell it. You don’t normally smell that on the pitch. But we could still play football with it – the headache wasn’t too bad.”
The scent didn’t seem to be a major issue, as it wasn’t included in the UEFA match delegate’s report, and it didn’t hinder Twente’s performance, as they secured a win. Some speculated that Celtic fans might have been channeling their club’s famous supporter, Snoop Dogg, known for his affinity for such substances.
