The University of South Carolina has announced the passing of Kevin Long, a former NFL running back and a member of the university’s Athletics Hall of Fame, at the age of 69. Long, originally from Clinton, South Carolina, passed away on September 10. No cause of death has been disclosed.Kevin Long had a notable career both in college and the NFL. He played for the University of South Carolina from 1973 to 1976, becoming the first running back in the program’s history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season, recording 1,133 yards in 1975. He was later drafted by the New York Jets in the 7th round of the 1977 NFL Draft, where he enjoyed a five-year career. During his time with the Jets, Long rushed for 2,190 yards and 25 touchdowns.In a 2020 interview, Long reflected fondly on his NFL career, sharing his awe of arriving in New York after growing up in small-town Clinton, South Carolina. Long expressed his lifelong dream of playing in the NFL and spoke warmly about his experience with the Jets.Long was married to Frankie for 36 years, and they had four children: Kevin, Latifah, Alisa, and Salia.Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
