Ireland’s tough night in Piraeus continued their poor run against Greece, as a controversial penalty decision in the early stages left the Irish frustrated. Evan Ferguson appeared to be fouled by Greece’s Lazaros Rota after a defensive error, but no VAR check was made. Greece took advantage later, with Tasos Bakasetas and Petros Mantalos scoring second-half goals to secure victory and maintain their position atop the UEFA Nations League table.

The match was emotionally charged for Greece, who paid tribute to George Baldock after his tragic death. Ireland, fresh off a rare win in Finland, couldn’t build momentum. Greece’s attacking dominance, particularly from the left flank through Dimitris Giannoulis, led to numerous chances, forcing Ireland’s goalkeeper, Caoimhín Kelleher, into several saves.

Despite moments of resistance, such as a near goal by Jack Taylor in the 69th minute, Ireland couldn’t break through. Greece sealed the win when Kelleher’s late pass was intercepted by Mantalos, who rounded him to score the second.

This match marked Greece’s third consecutive victory over Ireland, extending their unbeaten run in 2023 and 2024 to 17 games. Ireland’s defeat reflects ongoing issues, particularly in their defensive structure and inability to capitalize on early chances.
