Precious Achiuwa could become a key difference-maker for the New York Knicks in their 2024-25 NBA season, particularly due to Mitchell Robinson’s extended injury absence. Achiuwa, re-signed for $6 million, is expected to see an increased role, stepping up as a vital piece in the Knicks’ second unit. Last season, Achiuwa posted solid numbers—7.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game in just over 24 minutes a night, while shooting 52.5% from the floor.
With Robinson sidelined until at least January, Achiuwa’s responsibilities will grow. He’ll likely see more than the 20-29 minutes per game he thrived on last season, during which he averaged 8.8 points and 7.9 rebounds. His versatility as a player who can operate at both the power forward and center positions allows coach Tom Thibodeau to deploy him alongside Karl-Anthony Towns when the Knicks opt for a bigger lineup.
Achiuwa’s impact on the offensive glass is another critical area for the Knicks. With Robinson and Isaiah Hartenstein (who joined the Oklahoma City Thunder) no longer available to provide second-chance opportunities, Achiuwa, who posted a 13.3% offensive rebounding rate last season, will be leaned on heavily to fill that void.
Additionally, the Knicks’ new offensive system, featuring elite scorers like Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns, could open up more playmaking opportunities for Achiuwa. His ability to function as a pick-and-roll partner for backup point guard Cameron Payne, and his knack for finding shots around the rim, suggest he could elevate his game further this season. If Achiuwa can consistently perform at this level, he could potentially entrench himself as the Knicks’ primary backup big man and possibly make Robinson expendable when he returns from injury.
Achiuwa’s performance through the first half of the season will be crucial, and a strong showing could lead to career-defining moments as he plays a pivotal role in the Knicks’ frontcourt .
