Celtic defender Auston Trusty is still awaiting a significant opportunity to shine with the United States national team following Mauricio Pochettino’s debut match as head coach.
Trusty was included in the USA squad for their two matches this week, hoping for a chance to play as the national team enters a new chapter under Pochettino’s leadership.
The summer signing for the Bhoys has earned two caps but hasn’t featured since coming on as a substitute during the Nations League final win over Canada in June 2023.
Pochettino, who took over as USA manager last month, had the opportunity to try out new players in a friendly against Panama on Saturday night.
However, Trusty remained on the bench during the game in Austin, Texas, even with injuries sidelining Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards and fellow Celtic player Cameron Carter-Vickers.
Pochettino opted for a flexible back three, featuring veteran Tim Ream, Toulouse’s Mark McKenzie, and young talent Joseph Scally, with Fulham’s Antonee Robinson playing as a wing-back.
From the USA’s perspective, the decision worked well, as the team secured a 2-0 victory with goals from Yunus Musah and Ricardo Pepi.
At the club level, Trusty faces competition for playing time too, with Carter-Vickers set to return to training ahead of Celtic’s upcoming match against Aberdeen at Celtic Park.
Given Trusty’s recent travels, it’s likely that Scales will hold on to the starting spot for now.
