Liam Lawson will replace Daniel Ricciardo at Red Bull for the remainder of the 2024 season and is considered a strong contender for a potential race seat with Red Bull Racing in 2025. This comes after Lawson served as a reserve driver for both Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri since 2022. His return to racing follows a five-race stint last season, where he stepped in for Ricciardo after the Australian broke his hand during the Dutch Grand Prix.
Although initially overlooked for a race seat in 2024, Lawson stayed sharp through various test days, including running older spec cars and more recently driving a Red Bull Racing car at Mugello in a Pirelli tire test. These tests have helped him remain race-ready despite not having a dedicated racing program this year.
Lawson confirmed that these test outings were designed as evaluation days, where team bosses could assess his potential under pressure. While he acknowledges the challenge of jumping back into an F1 car mid-season, particularly at a circuit like Austin’s Circuit of The Americas, Lawson feels better prepared this time compared to last year.
His performance and adaptability will be closely watched as Red Bull considers future lineup decisions, particularly with an eye on the 2025 season.
