Report:Why the fuss? Toni Kroos wasn’t wrong, Celtic were second rate in Dortmund

Toni Kroos, a legendary midfielder who retired after Euro 2024, recently made headlines with his mixed comments about Celtic’s Champions League performance. Kroos, a four-time Champions League winner and World Cup champion, praised Celtic Park’s atmosphere, recalling how playing there in 2022 during Real Madrid’s 3-0 win was an unforgettable experience. He said it was the best atmosphere he had ever encountered in his career, especially noting how electric it felt during the Champions League anthem.

However, Kroos had far less positive remarks about Celtic’s on-pitch performance following their 7-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in October 2024. Speaking on the podcast *Einfach mal Luppen*, he labeled Celtic a “second-class opponent” in reference to Dortmund’s dominant win, implying that despite Celtic’s renowned support, their level of play did not match their stature off the field. His comments reflect frustration with Celtic’s struggles in Europe, with Kroos highlighting the contrast between the atmosphere at Parkhead and the team’s quality against elite opposition .
