Leicester City wanted ‘exciting’ striker in 2022, he’s now one of Europe’s best and worth £75m

Leicester City’s 2024-25 Premier League campaign has been challenging so far, but their recent 1-0 victory over Bournemouth, courtesy of Facundo Buonanotte’s stunning goal, gave Steve Cooper’s side their first win of the season. This result lifted them to 15th place in the table with six points, three above the relegation zone. The victory could serve as a turning point as they face a crucial run of fixtures against Southampton, Nottingham Forest, and Ipswich Town.

Despite some struggles, Leicester haven’t found it difficult to score, netting nine goals in seven games, although Jamie Vardy is the only forward to find the back of the net twice. The team’s inability to sign a prolific striker, such as Lois Openda, back in 2022 is seen as a missed opportunity. Openda, who was on their radar, ended up signing for RB Leipzig in 2023 for £36 million after a stellar season in Ligue 1. He has since become one of the Bundesliga’s top scorers, raising his value to a reported £75 million or more .

Leicester fans remain critical of Cooper, but the Bournemouth victory provides a glimmer of hope for a more positive campaign going forward.
