LATEST NEWS: We have developed a genuine player…

Liam Scales is often compared to his central defensive partner, the exceptional Cameron Carter-Vickers. However, it’s only when Carter-Vickers is absent and Scales steps up as the senior figure in defence that the difference between him and those looking to replace him becomes evident.

After a successful stint as first choice at Shamrock Rovers, Scales arrived at Celtic three years ago, but he struggled to break into the first team initially, playing only a few games before being loaned to Aberdeen. Jim Goodwin, who brought him to Aberdeen, was later sacked following a shock Scottish Cup loss to Darvel. Under Barry Robson’s management, Aberdeen tried to keep Scales for another loan spell, but injuries at Celtic halted the move.

Scales’ career took an unexpected turn in August 2023 when he was called up to the team after Celtic’s League Cup exit to Kilmarnock. In a home draw against St. Johnstone, Scales was vulnerable to balls over the top, but the real test came the following week against Rangers at Ibrox. Many feared a heavy defeat, especially after Celtic’s 3-0 loss there earlier in the year. However, Scales proved his worth, anchoring a resilient Celtic defence and earning praise for his performance.

While Scales may never reach the level of Cameron Carter-Vickers, his importance becomes clear when compared to others. Brendan Rodgers will need a special player to replace him. In addition to his solid performances for Celtic, Scales recently scored his first Champions League goal and followed it up by netting his first international goal for Ireland in a win against Finland.

Scales’ development into a reliable player deserves recognition, and credit goes to all involved in his journey.
