Daizen Maeda was one of the first to congratulate Oh Hyeon-gyu after the young striker scored his first international goal in South Korea’s 2-0 win over Jordan. The pair had been Celtic teammates for 18 months, but Oh left for Genk in the summer after first-team opportunities became limited following Adam Idah’s arrival.
Although Oh had a decent scoring record at Celtic—netting a goal every 100 minutes according to Soccerway—he struggled to offer the same level of competition to Kyogo Furuhashi that Giorgos Giakoumakis had provided.
Oh joined Celtic in January 2023 after attending the World Cup in Qatar, though he was not officially part of the South Korea squad. At just 21 years old, it was a challenge he couldn’t fully overcome.
Since moving to Genk, Oh has scored three goals in eight substitute appearances, totaling 105 minutes. In his latest outing, he came off the bench in the 51st minute and netted South Korea’s second goal 17 minutes later. His next opportunity comes on Tuesday in a home match against Iraq, where he will look to continue his progress.
