Wolves have had a challenging start to the Premier League season, currently sitting at the bottom of the table after seven matches, with only one win. Their most recent game before the international break was a 5-3 loss to Brentford, which further increased the frustration of fans. Supporters have called for the club’s owners, Fosun, to sell, and pressure has mounted on manager Gary O’Neil due to their poor run of form.
Despite this, the Wolves board remains fully supportive of O’Neil, believing he can turn the season around. The team’s struggles, such as conceding four goals in the second half against Chelsea and collapsing against Brentford, have left fans feeling pessimistic. However, many believe that the squad’s talent should yield better results.
Among the standout players is Matheus Cunha, who has been impressive since O’Neil’s arrival. Midfielders Joao Gomes and Andre Gomes have also shown quality, with Joao Gomes, in particular, increasing in value since his £15 million move from Flamengo in January 2023. Gomes has made the fourth most tackles in the Premier League this season, but his performances have dipped slightly compared to last season, where he formed an excellent partnership with Mario Lemina in a 3-4-3 system.
O’Neil has hinted at possibly reverting back to that formation after the international break, which could help Gomes return to his best. Despite receiving some criticism for picking up yellow cards and a slight drop in form, Gomes remains a crucial player for Wolves. There are suggestions that O’Neil should consider partnering Gomes with Andre, potentially dropping Lemina, who had a poor game against Brentford, as Wolves prepare to face Manchester City.
