Glasgow Rangers attacking midfielder Ianis Hagi made his return in the club’s 2-0 victory over St Johnstone at Ibrox on Sunday. The Romanian international had previously been sidelined due to a contractual issue but came off the bench at halftime to replace Ross McCausland.
Hagi had an eventful second half, delivering a brilliant pass that led to Vaclav Cerny scoring Rangers’ second goal. However, his performance was marred by a red card after a reckless studs-up challenge in midfield.
As of October 9, 2024, Transfermarkt values Hagi at €1.8m (£1.5m). Meanwhile, Rangers’ summer signing, Connor Barron, has already seen his market value surpass that of the 25-year-old Hagi. Barron, who joined from Aberdeen, was valued at €1m (£838k) at the time of his transfer, significantly less than Hagi’s current worth.
Barron, a Scotland U21 international, made 29 appearances and 24 starts in the Scottish Premiership for Aberdeen during the 2023/24 season. Football FanCast’s Market Movers series tracks these shifts in the ever-changing transfer market.
Connor Barron, who featured six times in the Europa Conference League last season, displayed his tough tackling ability with an average of 2.6 tackles and interceptions per game in the Scottish Premiership. However, his passing accuracy was less consistent, with only 79% of his passes completed for Aberdeen.
As of now, Transfermarkt values Barron at €2m (£1.7m), a significant increase from his summer valuation. His market value has doubled in just a few months, making him more valuable than Ianis Hagi, despite being with Rangers for a short period.
The 22-year-old midfielder has already made 13 appearances for Rangers this season. Aside from a mistake against Lyon, Barron has been a standout performer. He has earned praise from Scotland U21 manager Scott Gemmill, who last year described him as “very impressive” both on and off the pitch.
Connor Barron | 23/24 Premiership | 24/25 Premiership |
---|---|---|
Appearances | 29 | 7 |
Pass accuracy | 79% | 91% |
Tackles + interceptions per game | 2.6 | 2.9 |
Clearances per game | 1.0 | 2.3 |
Ground duels won per game | 2.7 | 2.9 |

As seen in the table above, Barron has significantly improved his passing accuracy since joining Rangers, completing 12% more of his attempted passes compared to his time at Aberdeen. In addition, he has increased his contributions defensively, making more tackles, interceptions, and clearances per game, showcasing his development since his summer move to Ibrox.
This progression is reflected in his rising market value, which now surpasses that of Ianis Hagi. Rangers appear to have struck gold with Barron, securing a young talent with immense potential for the future.
