Former Celtic, Sunderland, and Hibs striker Anthony Stokes has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for a series of serious offences in Dublin.
The 36-year-old, a familiar figure to Celtic fans from his time at the club, was convicted of drug possession and dangerous driving after a high-speed chase earlier this year. Stokes, who was over the alcohol limit, drove at a dangerous speed of 160km/h, nearly colliding with another vehicle during the late-night incident on January 6, 2023. The pursuit ended when authorities discovered nearly €4,000 worth of cocaine in his possession.
Judge Gráinne Malone, presiding over the case at Dublin District Court, refused to suspend any portion of the sentence, emphasizing the gravity of Stokes’ actions.
Stokes’ legal troubles worsened after a failed drug test. He had also pleaded guilty to possessing 86 illegal street tablets in Cabinteely, south Co. Dublin, just ten days after the driving incident, which the court considered an aggravating factor.
Stokes’ downfall is a sharp contrast to his career highs, where he won multiple Scottish league titles and Scottish Cups with Celtic and played a key role in Hibs’ historic Scottish Cup final triumph.
