Blue Jays General Manager Ross Atkins isn’t pointing fingers at the team’s lack of power for what has been their most disappointing offensive season in decades. As the team struggles to find consistency at the plate, many fans and analysts have blamed a lack of home run production and big hits for the Blue Jays’ recent woes. However, Atkins offers a different perspective.
In a recent press conference, Atkins addressed the team’s offensive struggles, noting that while power is important, it’s not the sole factor behind the disappointing numbers this season. “It’s easy to look at the lack of home runs and think that’s the entire story,” Atkins said. “But there’s so much more that goes into offensive performance—timely hitting, discipline, and putting the ball in play when it matters. We just haven’t executed in key moments.”
This season has been one of the lowest-scoring for the Blue Jays in recent history, leaving fans frustrated and looking for answers. The team’s inability to hit for power has been a glaring issue, especially compared to past seasons when the long ball was a key weapon. Yet, Atkins believes that focusing solely on power numbers would be missing the bigger picture. He pointed out the importance of creating opportunities and taking advantage of them, noting that the team has left too many runners stranded and failed to capitalize on scoring chances.
“We need to do a better job of situational hitting,” Atkins continued. “It’s not just about hitting the ball out of the park—it’s about getting guys on base and finding ways to bring them home. That’s been our biggest issue, not necessarily the power aspect.”
While the fans may want to see more fireworks, the Blue Jays’ GM emphasized that a balanced approach at the plate is the key to sustained success. Atkins remains confident that the team’s struggles are fixable, stressing that there is still plenty of talent in the lineup. “We’ve got a lot of young players with tremendous potential, and we know what this group is capable of. We’re not making excuses, but we understand it’s a process, and we’re committed to finding a solution.”
As the Blue Jays wrap up their disappointing season, it’s clear that the team will need to make adjustments. Whether it’s adding more power hitters or refocusing on situational approaches, the coming offseason will be critical for turning things around. In the meantime, Atkins and the rest of the organization are focused on identifying the underlying issues and ensuring that the Blue Jays return to form next year.
