South Korean midfielder Kwon Hyeok-kyu, currently on loan from Celtic to Hibernian, is enduring a challenging start in Edinburgh as Hibs continue to struggle in the Scottish Premiership. Kwon joined the Easter Road club hoping to gain valuable playing time and acclimate to the rigors of Scottish football.
His objective is clear: to impress Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers and demonstrate that he can contribute to the squad at Parkhead next season. However, Hibernian’s poor form has slowed Kwon’s progress.
With just five points from a possible 21, Hibs are near the bottom of the table. Their 2-1 loss to Motherwell on Saturday only added to their woes. Kwon played the full match but couldn’t help turn the tide for the Hibees, who are now winless in their last three league matches.
Kwon’s individual performance wasn’t poor, but thriving in a team that lacks direction presents a real challenge. Under manager David Gray, who took over this summer, Hibs appear to be struggling with consistency, making it hard for players like Kwon to shine. Gray is still adapting to his role as head coach, and the team’s uncertain performances reflect that.
It’s far from the ideal situation for Kwon, who had hoped his loan spell would allow him to adjust to the physical and fast-paced nature of the Scottish game after a brief stint in Paisley last season.
Instead, he finds himself in a team in transition, struggling to secure results. Celtic fans will hope Kwon’s talent isn’t diminished by Hibs’ difficulties and that he returns to Parkhead next season, ready to compete for a spot under Rodgers.
With plenty of football left to be played, Kwon still has time to adapt and prove his value. But for now, his development is being tested in a team battling for form and stability.
