Two weeks after suffering a heavy defeat to Celtic in the Champions League, Vladimir Weiss has announced his retirement from football.
The former Manchester City winger captained the team that night, received a booking, and was later substituted. Now, Weiss has decided to retire, leaving his club in a tough position just two games into their Champions League campaign.
Having led his team through four rounds of qualifiers, facing Celtic was a proud moment for Weiss, especially with his father on the sidelines as Slovan embarked on their first-ever Champions League fixture.
However, after a 5-1 loss to Celtic and a 4-0 home defeat to Manchester City, the club captain has opted to step away. This afternoon, the Manchester Evening News reported:
“Former Manchester City youngster Vladimir Weiss has quit football following Slovan Bratislava’s latest heavy defeat in the Champions League.
Pep Guardiola’s side cruised to their first victory of the competition, comfortably beating the Slovakians 4-0. Early goals from Ilkay Gundogan and Phil Foden put City in control, followed by Erling Haaland’s 42nd goal in 41 Champions League appearances and a goal from substitute James McAtee.
It was Slovan’s second consecutive heavy loss in the competition, following their 5-1 thrashing at Celtic, who themselves were later beaten 7-1 by Borussia Dortmund. This seemed to be too much for veteran Vladimir Weiss, who was taken off by his father, also named Vladimir, after 63 minutes.
After two rounds, Slovan is one of eight teams yet to earn a point as the newly formatted ‘super-league’ progresses.
Weiss received a first-half booking for a foul on Arne Engels during the Celtic match, with Alistair Johnston also yellow-carded for a challenge on the Slovan captain.
Approaching his 35th birthday, Weiss had valuable experience to contribute to the Slovakian champions. However, a quarter of the way into what appeared to be the perfect swansong, he has decided to call it a day.”
