Two Brighton & Hove Albion fans were stabbed in Rome ahead of their team’s Europa League match against AS Roma. The incident occurred just after midnight when a group of Brighton fans, casually walking back from a bar, was attacked by around six individuals wearing balaclavas in the Via Cavour area.
One of the Brighton supporters, Joey Thorpe, described how they were ambushed from behind and violently assaulted, with two of his friends being stabbed. One of the victims remains in the hospital with a “bad wound,” and the incident has understandably left the group shaken. Four people were injured in total, though their wounds are reportedly non-life-threatening.
Local authorities, Brighton & Hove City Council leader Bella Sankey, and MP Caroline Lucas have expressed horror at the attack, with both sharing messages of support for the victims. Brighton fans traveling to the match are being urged to remain vigilant, and the club has advised supporters to use a free shuttle service to and from the Stadio Olimpico for safety reasons. There has been no confirmation whether the attackers were Roma supporters.
Brighton & Hove Albion’s spokesperson also reminded fans to take precautions while in Rome due to street crime risks such as pickpocketing.
