West Bromwich Albion is off to a strong start in the Championship this season, sitting at the top of the table despite a summer of significant changes. Key players such as Brandon Thomas-Asante, Conor Townsend, and Okay Yokuslu departed, yet Carlos Corberan’s side remains unbeaten after six matches. This resilience has reinvigorated the club’s ambitions for promotion to the Premier League.
Looking back, one of the most beloved players in recent West Brom history, Matheus Pereira, played a crucial role in their 2019-20 promotion campaign. During that season, Pereira contributed eight goals and a remarkable 20 assists. He continued his impressive form in the Premier League, netting 12 goals and providing six assists despite the club’s relegation.
Pereira left West Brom for Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia in 2021 for a fee of £16 million. His move was seen as a loss for the club but a financial necessity. Since then, however, Pereira’s form has dipped significantly. After a tough spell in Saudi Arabia, where he scored just three goals in 42 appearances, he returned to Brazil with Cruzeiro. Despite better form there, his market value has plummeted to £2 million, a sharp decline from the £16 million he was valued at during his West Brom peak .
Though Pereira’s trajectory has slowed, West Brom remains focused on their current campaign, with aspirations of returning to the top flight where Pereira once shone.
