Wolverhampton Wanderers are considering signing free-agent defenders James Tomkins and Paul Dummett as short-term replacements for Yerson Mosquera, who has suffered a potentially season-ending knee injury. Mosquera, a 23-year-old Colombian centre-back, was brought back from a loan spell at Villarreal to replace Max Kilman, who joined West Ham for £40m. However, Mosquera’s injury leaves Wolves short in defense, having not signed a new centre-back before the season began.
Tomkins, 35, and Dummett, 32, are being considered due to their Premier League experience. Tomkins, who spent eight years at Crystal Palace, would be a better fit due to Mosquera being right-footed, while Dummett, released by Newcastle, primarily plays on the left. Despite their potential additions, Santiago Bueno, a 25-year-old Uruguayan international, could take on a larger role after replacing Mosquera in Wolves’ recent match.
Wolves’ manager Gary O’Neil remains secure in his position despite the team’s winless start in the Premier League, sitting bottom of the table. Despite poor results, O’Neil’s future at the club is seen as long-term, as he recently signed a new three-year deal with the club.
