Midfielder Luke O’Donnell has signed with English Premier League club Wolves for an initial fee in the six-figure range.
The 17-year-old recently secured a professional contract at the Ryan McBride Brandywell at the beginning of this season, becoming the second player from the academy to make a move to England this month, following goalkeeper Conal McDermott’s transfer to Portsmouth.
“This is an excellent opportunity for Luke, and we hold him in high regard, so it is not surprising that a prominent club like Wolves has shown interest,” stated Derry City CEO Sean Barrett.
“It is gratifying for us as a club to see our players progressing along a pathway that not only allows them to pursue opportunities abroad but also emphasizes our commitment to nurturing local talent for Derry City.”
“For the time being, we wish Luke all the best at Wolves and look forward to following his development there.”
O’Donnell made his senior debut in the League of Ireland last season and has been included on the bench three times this season. He has also represented Ireland at the under-17 level.
