Rangers’ interim chairman, John Gilligan, has urged Dave King to “behave like a proper shareholder” amidst ongoing uncertainty at the club. In his first press conference since taking over from John Bennett, Gilligan addressed King’s public comments about wanting to return as chairman. King, the largest shareholder at Ibrox with a 14.12% stake, has expressed his desire to return to the board following Bennett’s resignation. However, Gilligan suggested that King has not yet engaged in any discussions with the current Rangers board.
Gilligan emphasized that others had stepped up when King previously left the club and implied that King’s current public stance is not helpful. He advised King to handle matters with more discretion, stating: “Please, take it below the radar. Really, behave like a proper shareholder, don’t do what you’re doing.”
Despite King’s claims that he could help resolve what he sees as a “crisis” at Rangers, it appears the board is not keen on facilitating his return. The board is currently dealing with vacancies, including the need for a new CEO, following months of uncertainty and departures, including academy director Zeb Jacobs and former CEO James Bisgrove.
With significant issues still unresolved, including staffing and the first-team squad, Gilligan’s comments indicate that the board prefers stability and a more private approach to addressing the club’s challenges.
