During Arsenal’s 4-2 victory over Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium, a football fan was arrested after throwing a banana skin onto the pitch as Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang celebrated scoring a penalty in front of Tottenham supporters. London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed that seven arrests were made, with one directly related to the banana-throwing incident, which has been widely condemned as racist.
Tottenham quickly issued a statement, declaring the behavior “completely unacceptable” and confirming that the fan responsible would face a ban. Former Arsenal and England forward Ian Wright expressed his disappointment on BBC television, emphasizing the embarrassment caused to both Tottenham and the Premier League.
Additionally, six other arrests were made for public order offenses, including at least two Arsenal fans who lit smoke canisters during the match. The game itself was highly charged, with tempers flaring after Tottenham’s Eric Dier equalized, leading to a heated exchange between players that resulted in yellow cards and a charge from the Football Association for failing to control their players. Both clubs have until Thursday to respond to the FA charge.
