EXCLUSIVE: Leeds wanted to sign a star worth multiple millions to break record

Leeds United’s 1-0 defeat to Burnley at Elland Road on Saturday marked their first loss of the Championship season. Burnley’s Luca Koleosho scored the only goal, sprinting down the right wing and firing into the bottom corner in the first half. Despite Leeds having several chances, including Mateo Joseph missing a one-on-one opportunity and Wilfried Gnonto striking straight at Burnley keeper James Trafford, they couldn’t find the net.

Joseph, who has been leading the line for Leeds this season, has shown potential but still has work to do to prove himself as a reliable option for manager Daniel Farke. His return of one goal and two assists in five Championship matches is solid but unspectacular, leaving room for improvement. The club will hope he develops more successfully than former prospect Jay-Roy Grot, who struggled during his time at Elland Road.

Grot, signed in 2017 by then-manager Thomas Christiansen from NEC Nijmegen, was seen as a promising young talent after scoring five goals in 20 Eredivisie appearances. However, his time at Leeds was disappointing, as he failed to make a significant impact. Leeds will be hoping Joseph can grow into a more effective forward over time.
