Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer shared the harrowing details of his cardiac arrest during a Premier League match against Bournemouth on December 16, 2023. Lockyer, 29, collapsed on the pitch and later revealed that his heart stopped for two minutes and 40 seconds during the incident. He was fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) after spending five days in the hospital.
Lockyer described how he initially felt lightheaded while running towards the halfway line before collapsing. Unlike his previous collapse during Luton’s Championship play-off final victory in May, Lockyer said this time felt more severe and disorientating. Despite the terrifying experience, he was revived and is now focused on recovery.
The emotional toll of the event was particularly hard on his family, especially as his girlfriend was seven months pregnant at the time. Lockyer has since been reunited with his teammates and is hopeful about returning to football, although he acknowledges that it will depend on further medical assessments.
