LATEST UPDATE: Sunderland to assess attacker’s transfer situation

Sunderland are set to reassess Jewison Bennette’s situation in January after being unable to secure a loan move for the winger in the summer transfer window. At just 20 years old, Bennette has found himself playing with the Under-21s, having fallen down the pecking order with the first team. This is not ideal for his development, as Sunderland feel he needs senior football to continue progressing.

Manager Regis Le Bris stated that although Bennette is training with the senior squad, the lack of first-team opportunities is a concern. The club may try him in different positions, such as left-back, to help his development until the January window, when they will reassess his situation and explore potential loan options.

Bennette signed for Sunderland in August 2022 on a four-year deal and has made 21 appearances for the club, scoring twice. Last season, he was loaned to Aris Thessaloniki in Greece but saw limited action, making just two appearances. He is also a Costa Rica international with 12 caps and was part of the squad at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

For now, Bennette will focus on maintaining his fitness with the U21s as he waits for a potential new opportunity in the winter transfer window.
