EXCLUSIVE: Dominic Calvert-Lewin absence explained as illness hits Everton squad

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has scored in each of his last two appearances for Everton, is absent from the squad for tonight’s Carabao Cup tie against Southampton due to illness. Everton manager Sean Dyche made eight changes to the lineup following the team’s recent 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa. Among these changes, 17-year-old Harrison Armstrong is handed his first start for the club.

Vitalii Mykolenko, who was forced off during the Villa match with an illness, is also missing, as are James Tarkowski, James Garner, and Idrissa Gueye, all sidelined due to illness as well. Dyche has opted to start Joao Virginia in goal, with Jordan Pickford on the bench, while Jake O’Brien partners Michael Keane in central defense, and Dwight McNeil may be required to fill in at left-back despite his recent success as a forward.

The midfield sees Orel Mangala and Abdoulaye Doucoure, who captains the side, alongside Jesper Lindstrom on the wing, while Beto leads the attack.

**Everton Starting XI:**
Virginia; Dixon, O’Brien, Keane, McNeil; Mangala, Armstrong, Doucoure; Lindstrom, Ndiaye, Beto.

**Substitutes:**
Pickford, Begovic, Harrison, Young, Iroegbunam, Sherif, Butterfield, Moonan, Barker.

Calvert-Lewin’s absence will be closely monitored with hopes he can return for Everton’s Premier League match against Leicester City on Saturday.
