Allen delighted with first win as Saints boss – but insists there is more to come.

Goals from Rianna Dean and Molly Pike helped Southampton’s 33-year-old head coach secure her first competitive victory since succeeding Marieanne Spacey-Cale. Dean and Pike both netted impressive long-range efforts, catching Sunderland goalkeeper Demi Lambourne off guard with a clever lob.

The win was bolstered by goalkeeper Fran Stenson, who saved a crucial penalty at 0-0, keeping Southampton in the game after a shaky first-half performance.

Speaking to Southampton’s media team, head coach Allen said: “This is a tough place to come, nobody likes playing here, so to get three goals, three points, and a clean sheet is huge.

“We started strong in the first 10 minutes and could have been one or two goals up. Then the momentum shifted, and we struggled for the remainder of the first half. The players were made aware of that at halftime. The second half was a mix—some positives but also areas for improvement.

“We were clinical in the second half, with some stunning finishes. I’m happy with the result, but there’s more to come. Fran’s penalty save was massive, and we made some last-ditch defensive plays, which is something we need to clean up.”

Stenson also made a remarkable diving save to stop Sunderland from scoring after they gained control of the game. Allen praised her: “That save was world-class. I don’t think many keepers in any league could make a stop like that. She’s been incredible for us.”

While Dean and Pike’s goals were contenders for goal of the month, Dean’s opener was a well-crafted team effort. Lucia Kendell regained possession, quickly played it forward to Rachel Rowe, who set up Dean to finish clinically.

Allen emphasized the importance of scoring different types of goals and was pleased her side exploited a weakness in Sunderland’s defense. “It gives us confidence. We noticed how wide Sunderland’s defense played, so we knew if we pressed high, there would be opportunities to quickly play the ball forward.

“Did I expect us to score from 30 or 40 yards out? No, but the players spotted the chances and capitalized on them.

“The start of the season is always tough because everyone is highly motivated. Grinding out results is key.

“I’d love us to hit top form faster, but we’re getting results. There are moments where I’m applauding what the team is doing; we just need more consistency. There’s work to be done on the training pitch, but this league is all about grinding out performances.”
