Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been charged by the FA following a racist comment made during a TV appearance, where he joked about teammate Son Heung-min. Bentancur, when asked about getting a Spurs player’s shirt, replied, “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too, as they all look the same.” He later issued an apology on social media, acknowledging it as a “very bad joke.”
Anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out received numerous complaints, which were forwarded to both Tottenham and relevant authorities. The FA charged Bentancur under Rule E3.1 for using abusive or insulting language, with the charge further aggravated under Rule E3.2 for referencing race or nationality.
Son Heung-min responded, accepting Bentancur’s apology and stressing that the incident had not affected their relationship, stating that they remain “brothers” and are focused on the new season. Bentancur has until September 19 to respond to the FA charge.
